There are officially 43 days left of summer (yes, I’m counting and dreading it!). But there’s one thing that makes the gradual transition to a new season a little easier: picking out new nail colors! As the weather cools and summer starts to wind down, our editors are gravitating towards transitional polish shades to get ahead of the change.

For Senior Beauty Editor, Akili King, transitional shades mean tepping outside her neutral comfort zone for matcha-toned nails. Meanwhile, Senior Director of Editorial Victoria Uwumarogie is all about warm, deep fuchsia pedicures. For me, however, I like my nails to look like mine, but better. So, I’ve become an almost exclusive devotee of the hyperrealistic nail trend.

Read on for the transitional nail colors five ESSENCE editors swear by, from green and fuchsia to nude and more.

    Shelby Stewart, Content Operations Manager

    Zoya Nail Polish in “Amy”

“Though not a color per se, I ran polka dots into the ground all summer,” Stewart says.

    $12

Essie Nail Polish in “Bachelorette Bash”

“Hot pink was a pretty bright color for the summer months on my skin,” Stewart says.

Essie Nail Polish in “Willow in the Wind”

“I would for sure say green,” Stewart says about her favorite transitional shade. “My birthstone is peridot and my birthday is in August.”

    $10

Victoria Uwumarogie, Senior Director of Editorial

Chillhouse Nail Polish in “Cool Colada”

“Black women and the color yellow are a match made in heaven,” Uwumarogie says. “It makes sense that the shade works so well on our hands and feet. It brings in the sunshine even on those overcast days.”

    $12

Olive & June Nail Polish in “It’s Serving Melon Cocktails”

“I recently became obsessed with pale shades,” Uwumarogie says. “I just wore a very pale peach shade on my toes and it was perfect. Not too bright. Not too dark and giving fall. Just enough color and personality.”

    $10

Habit Cosmetics Nail Polish in “06 Darling Nikki”

“I love a deep pink or fuchsia,” Uwumarogie says. “I think it brightens up everything and gives a girlish charm to even loungewear.”

    $14

    Akili King, Senior Beauty Editor

    Zoya Nail Polish in “Tanya”

“I’m usually pretty basic when it comes to my nails: French tips, light pink, white, or red are my safety zones,” King says.

    $12

Chillhouse Nail Polish in “Sage the Room”

“It feels fresh and fun, and great for the transitional seasons and reminds me of my morning cup of matcha!” King says.

    $12

    India Espy-Jones, Contributing Beauty Editor

Après Nail Polish in “Organic Eggshell”

This shade is one of the colors my nail tech uses for my hyperrealistic French tips. It’s eggshell instead of pure white, which, when mixed with other shades, matches perfectly to my natural nail tip.

    $15

OPI Nail Polish in “Put It In Neutral”

I’ve been into hyperrealistic French tips and natural nail-mimicking colors. This one is similar to “Bubble Bath,” but leans more cool and neutral for a natural nail finish.

    $12

OPI Nail Polish in “Bubble Bath”

This nail shade is viral for good reason. It’s the perfect pink-nude for a natural-looking, yet feminine finish.
