There are some people who can tell you the exact moment they knew they’d found their person. For Demi, it wasn’t one grand gesture—it was a collection of little moments that kept pointing her back to Khairi.

Before TikTok was convincing everyone to shoot their shot, the two connected the old-fashioned Gen Z way: Snapchat. They had mutual friends, exchanged a few messages, and one joke that made Demi laugh eventually turned into a first date at Cyclone Anaya’s in Houston.

She still remembers her first impression.

Dang, he smells good,” she tells ESSENCE.

The conversation came easily. He was handsome, polite and every bit the gentleman she hoped he’d be—though she admits she wasted no time checking him when he casually called the waiter “mama.”

“I was strict from day one,” she jokes.

Khairi remembers something entirely different. He thought she was a “cutie pie,” but it was her unmistakable Texas twang that really stuck with him.

Years later, those first impressions have given way to something much deeper.

Despite being raised in different faiths—Khairi Muslim and Demi Christian—the couple chose curiosity over fear. Instead of seeing their differences as dealbreakers, they leaned into mutual respect, allowing each other the space to remain fully themselves.

That same intentionality would shape every part of their relationship, from a surprise proposal disguised as a photoshoot to choosing Peach Orchard Venue for their wedding after Demi felt what she describes as “literal chills” before she even stepped out of the car.

Some of their favorite memories from the engagement season happened long before they walked down the aisle: pushing the living room furniture aside to practice their first dance to Stevie Wonder’s “Ribbon in the Sky,” laughing as Khairi somehow turned a simple step-tap into marching in place, and making the decision that their reception would feature warm cinnamon rolls instead of a traditional wedding cake because, well, that’s what they actually love.

Even the morning of their wedding reflected who they are.

Ignoring the old superstition that says couples shouldn’t see one another before the ceremony, Demi and Khairi woke up together, walked to their neighborhood coffee shop for a matcha and tea, then headed home to get ready separately.

“I wanted our wedding morning to feel familiar and calm,” Demi says. “That’s exactly what it was.”

The couple exchanged vows surrounded by the people they love most, but it was the quiet moments that stayed with Demi. Before the ceremony, she prayed, asking God for three things: that Khairi would be overcome with emotion, that she could somehow keep her composure, and that they would remain fully present throughout a day they had spent months planning.

Her first prayer was answered almost immediately.

The man who insisted he wouldn’t cry because “it’s a happy day” became emotional moments before walking down the aisle.

“He laughs now and says I sabotaged him,” Demi says. “And I did.”
