In the world of high-end fashion, “overnight success” is usually a myth draped in silk. Behind every brand that appears to emerge out of nowhere are years of sketches, setbacks, revisions and decisions that never make it to the final product. For Karrica, the visionary architect and designer behind luxury brand KARRICA, her decade long rise has been anything but accidental. It was built with intention, precision and purpose.

“Handbags and footwear are structures. They play into those shapes and balance and engineering,” she said while explaining the origins of her education and passion for design.

“I went to school for architecture, so handbags and footwear are structures,” she says, speaking with the measured confidence of a woman who understands both the math and the magic of luxury.

“They play into those shapes and balance and engineering. Architecture begins where engineering ends.”

That philosophy is woven into the DNA of KARRICA, where bold silhouettes and intricate details come together to create pieces designed to stand out and stand the test of time.

Karrica’s journey from a design sketch to becoming a sought-after name among athletes and WAGs (wives and girlfriends of professional athletes) has required more than a sharp eye for fashion. She views each handbag as a structure, one built around balance, proportion, functionality and a strong foundation. That same mindset has shaped the way she has built her brand, relying on the resilience that has also defined the athletes who have embraced her designs.

Long before the world knew the name KARRICA, there was Klassic Kloth. But after the tragic passing of her brother Gustave, who was not only family but also her business partner, Karrica stepped away from the fashion world for several years to grieve, reflect and reimagine what she wanted her next chapter to look like.

“My mother told me, ‘Call the brand KARRICA,’” she recalled with a laugh.

At first, Karrica wasn’t sold on the idea of putting her own name on the brand. But after some convincing, and thousands of dollars invested into rebranding, she eventually embraced the change. And just like that, KARRICA was born. When she eventually returned, the brand began to take shape in a new way.

With an extensive exposure in the arts, she fully immersed herself into exploring fabrics, patterns and all the intricate and eccentric details that go into production. That broad education taught her the value of the “long game.” This meticulous approach birthed the Iconic Elizabeth Bag, the brand’s hero product. It was a sketch she protected for ten years, following the advice of the late fashion icon André Leon Talley.

“Your best design, keep it for yourself,” he insisted. “Even if you don’t use it for another 20 years, you keep it for yourself,” he instilled into Karrica. The message still echoes loudly through her work today.

To date, the brand has moved over 14,000 units, a staggering number for an independent luxury house that prides itself on hand-stitched quality and premium materials sourced from places like Nigeria.

The Cease, The Desist, and The Irony

From developing her signature Elizabeth Bag to finding an unexpected lane within sports culture, she has continued to push KARRICA forward. The brand’s trajectory took a sharp turn when Karrica released her sports-inspired collection. Drawing from her family’s deep roots in athletics, she designed a line that resonated instantly with the sports community. After sporting her own custom merch to a baseball game, she was stopped by fans enthralled by the bag. From then, a sparked ignited in Karrica’s mind. The collection then went viral on TikTok, catching the eyes of fans and professional players alike.

The iconic sports handbags also caught the attention of WNBA and NBA legal teams — just not in the way Karrica had hoped. After following the steps to formally apply for licensing with the WNBA, Karrica was excited to share what she believed was a major milestone for her brand. She took to TikTok to announce the news, celebrating what she thought was the beginning of seeing her vision manifest.

Instead, that excitement was quickly met with a cease-and-desist, forcing Karrica to confront a setback she never expected. What started as an attempt to follow the proper channels and turn her sports-inspired designs into an official licensed collection suddenly put the future of the line in question.

For Karrica, this was a  heart breaking development with no end in sight to remedy the issue. Despite having documented proof of her attempts to secure proper licensing through their archaic email-based systems, the league pushed back, demanding she remove the posts.

“For many small brands, that might have been the end of the story,” Karrica reflects. “Instead, I kept creating. I kept designing.”

While the issue is yet to be resolved, Karrica’s bags and brand notoriety continue to flourish. Rather than allowing the setback to slow the momentum behind KARRICA, she continued to create, refine her designs and build relationships within the sports and fashion communities. The attention surrounding the collection only amplified interest in the brand, with athletes, WAGs and fashion-forward consumers continuing to gravitate toward her iconic designs.

    The Visionary’s Mandate

With WNBA All-Star Weekend now in the rearview, KARRICA’s presence throughout the tunnels, lounges and events surrounding the weekend put the brand directly in front of the athletes, celebrities and fans shaping the culture. The bags were seen throughout the weekend, sparking conversations and driving even more interest in the brand. Demand for the sports-inspired designs continues to grow, giving KARRICA an even bigger platform to expand its reach in fashion and sports culture. What began as a collection that faced an unexpected setback is now becoming one of the brand’s most recognizable and sought-after handbags.

“Sometimes our downfalls can be the biggest blessings and come-ups,” she concludes. “You don’t want to take me on? That’s fine. Because we’re going to make it work anyway.”

The story of KARRICA is a reminder to the WNBA community and the fashion industry at large: you can close a door, but you can’t stop someone who knows how to build their own house.

Remember that you started from nothing too. You’re 30 years strong because people believed in you. Sometimes you have to remember to believe in other people…” she says. “You guys were a dream too. So don’t crush somebody else’s.”

KARRICA’s latest collections are available at karrica.co, with select pieces also available at Belk department store locations. As the brand continues to gain momentum across fashion and sports culture, Karrica’s journey is a reminder that setbacks don’t have to define the story. Sometimes, they become the foundation for what comes next.
