Clyburn says South Carolina makes sense because of its demographics and its record of vetting candidates, while Roland argues that putting South Carolina first means Black interests and Black concerns are forced onto the table early. But the sharper part of the conversation is not just about the primary calendar. It is about political investment. Clyburn says Black voters are critically important to the Democratic Party and should never be placed in an “also-ran” position. He says candidates cannot assume Black support simply because they are Democrats or because they share a racial identity. Support has to be earned by showing real commitment to Black dreams, Black aspirations and Black communities. Roland takes that point further and levels a direct warning at Democratic leaders and strategists. He says Democrats are going to have to spend four times as much time and four times as much money to turn out Black voters. He criticizes party strategists for failing to listen to Black communities, for underfunding Black outreach and for spending too little with Black-owned media even when campaigns raise staggering amounts of money. One of Roland’s sharpest receipts is his claim that Kamala Harris’ campaign raised more than $1 billion, yet only $22 million went to Black-owned media. His point is not just about ad dollars. It is about respect, infrastructure and political seriousness. If Black voters are essential to Democratic victories, then Black media and Black voter mobilization should be funded like they matter. Clyburn also addresses criticism over his earlier comments on Black turnout. He says he is not blaming Black voters. He says he is blaming himself and other political leaders for failing to do enough to reach and mobilize people. That reframes the conversation away from scolding voters and toward demanding better strategy, deeper outreach and more meaningful investment. The core message is unmistakable: Black voters are too important to be treated like an afterthought. Democrats cannot keep praising Black voters in speeches while starving Black turnout operations, Black media and Black community engagement.
