England and Ghana will battle for a place in the World Cup round of 32 when the two unbeaten sides meet in a decisive Group L encounter on Tuesday.

Both teams opened their campaigns with victories and know another win would put them in a strong position to reach the knockout stage of the expanded 48-team tournament.

England head into the contest after an entertaining 4-2 victory over Croatia, while Ghana edged Panama 1-0 to continue their impressive start.

England seek to build on attacking strength

The Three Lions impressed going forward in their opening match, with Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford all finding the net.

Midfielder Declan Rice said England’s second-half performance against Croatia showed the level the team must maintain if they are to challenge for the title.

“We know as players the level, we know what’s required, and that second-half performance was probably the benchmark for us in terms of having to start the game at that level,” Rice said.

“We believe that if we can do that from the opening minute, with the players that we also have to come on and finish the game, we can beat any opponent in the world.”

England manager Thomas Tuchel also received a boost after confirming winger Bukayo Saka is no longer struggling with an Achilles problem.

“Bukayo is getting better and better,” Tuchel said. “He feels no more pain.”

    Ghana ready for challenge

Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz believes facing one of the tournament favourites will motivate his players rather than intimidate them.

“This is the easiest type of match, because when you’re about to play against England, France or Germany, you don’t need to say anything to the players,” Queiroz said.

“We know they have the three lions on their shirt, but we come from Ghana and have 33 million lions to fight for this game.”

The Black Stars will be boosted by the availability of midfielder Thomas Partey, who missed the opening win over Panama.

    Match outlook

England are favourites to secure all three points, but Ghana’s disciplined performance against Panama suggests they will provide a stern test.

With qualification to the knockout rounds potentially on the line, both teams have plenty to play for in what promises to be one of the standout fixtures of the group stage.

The Tuesday match at Gillette Stadium, Houston, kick-starts by 4pm local time (21:00 WAT)
