    Exelon Foundation STEM Academies Connect More Than 100 Students to Energy Careers

    BALTIMORE — More than 100 high school students from across the Baltimore region gained hands-on experience in science, technology, engineering and mathematics during the Exelon Foundation STEM Academies, held July 19–24, 2026, at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and the BGE White Marsh Training Center.

    The weeklong academies introduced students to career opportunities in the rapidly evolving energy industry while strengthening their leadership, teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills.

    Throughout the program, students worked alongside engineers, scientists and technical professionals from Exelon and its operating companies. Participants learned how STEM concepts are applied to real-world energy challenges and explored the technologies that support the region’s utility infrastructure.

    Interactive activities allowed students to build parallel and series electrical circuits, conduct laboratory experiments examining the greenhouse effect and design and test wind turbine blades. Participants also assembled solar panel arrays, built microgrids and competed in simulations focused on energy distribution and resilience.

    The activities were designed to show students how renewable energy, electrical systems and utility operations work together to provide safe, reliable and sustainable energy to communities.

    Students also collaborated in teams to develop solutions to a real-world energy and sustainability challenge. With guidance from Exelon mentors, participants refined their ideas during office hours, networking events and leadership development sessions.

    Teams presented their final projects to a panel of judges during the academy’s closing ceremony on Friday, July 24.

    The academies also included a visit to the BGE White Marsh Training Center, where students observed utility operations and interacted with engineers and technical professionals. The field experience gave participants a closer look at the equipment, workforce and specialized skills needed to power central Maryland.

    The Exelon Foundation STEM Academies seek to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers and energy professionals by providing students with meaningful exposure to STEM careers. The program also helps students develop skills that can support their success in college, technical training programs and the workforce.

    Several students were recognized for their performance, teamwork and innovative ideas during the academies.

    The STEM Academy winners were Nevaeh James, Aarna Malli Senthil and Deecha Ghimire.

    The Boys to STEM Academy winners were Cameron Crawford, Sergio Argueta, Anderson Santana Mateo and Max Johnson.

    By connecting students directly with industry professionals and giving them opportunities to solve practical problems, the academies offered participants a clearer understanding of the range of careers available within the energy sector.

    The experience also demonstrated that the future of energy will require professionals with expertise in engineering, environmental science, technology, renewable energy, skilled trades and other STEM-related fields.

    Through programs such as the STEM Academies, the Exelon Foundation is working to expand access to STEM education and encourage more young people to consider careers that will shape the future of energy and sustainability.
