The Federal Government has begun reintegrating 744 former insurgents into society after they completed a deradicalisation programme under Operation Safe Corridor in Gombe State.

The development, announced on Thursday, April 17, 2026, comes as Nigeria continues efforts to stabilise the North-East, where Boko Haram violence has lingered since the 2009 uprising.

The beneficiaries, drawn from several states including Borno, Yobe, Kano, and Adamawa, underwent months of rehabilitation involving counselling, vocational training, and civic education aimed at restoring them to civilian life.

Rehabilitation effort expands as authorities push peace agenda

Officials said the programme is part of a broader national security strategy to reduce insurgency by combining military pressure with non-kinetic interventions.

The Defence Headquarters noted that similar reintegration exercises have been conducted in previous years, including a notable 2021 batch of over 600 participants, reflecting a continuing pattern of rehabilitation efforts under the Safe Corridor initiative.

Community acceptance seen as key to success

Authorities stressed that the success of the reintegration process depends heavily on community acceptance, monitoring, and continued support from local stakeholders.

Security officials also addressed public concerns about the programme, clarifying that it is not an amnesty scheme but a structured rehabilitation process designed to prevent former extremists from returning to violence.

Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, stated, “This is not an amnesty programme but a deliberate strategy to reduce violence, discourage extremist recruitment, and ensure long-term national stability,” urging communities to support the reintegrated individuals as they rebuild their lives.
