    The Guyana Cultural Association of New York, Inc, (GCA) will kick off its 2026 season with an Aug. 30 symposium at 12:00 p.m. at Lefferts Historic House at 452 Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn. According to GCA president Ave Marie Brewster-Haynes, the non-profit will continue its weekend of events with an awards gala to honor its class of 2026 nominees at 7 p.m. on Sept. 2 at Russo’s on the Bay Banquet Hall, located at 162-45 Cross Bay Blvd. in Queens. GCA's 2026 theme, "Roots, Rhythm and Harmony: Celebrating Guyana’s Diamond Jubilee," will honor Guyanese individuals and  those of Guyanese heritage with the Godfrey Chin Prizes for Heritage Journalism, and the Derry Etkins Memorial Prizes for Music Education and Composition. “The outstanding achievements of the 2026 honorees reflect the richness of Guyana’s multi-cultural legacy and the spirit of our Diamond Jubilee,” said Brewster-Haynes. “We will also present the winners with plaques in categories: the Claire Ann Goring M.S. Youth Awards and GCA Cultural Enabler-Business Partner award." Find the 2026 winners’ announcements at guyfolkfest.org. Additionally, the festival will host a Kwe Kwe & Performing Arts Nite on Friday, Sept. 2 from 7 p.m. - 11:30 p.m. at 2806 Newkirk Avenue, Brooklyn, and the annual Folk Festival Family Fun Day on Sunday, Sept. 6, from 12 p.m. noon to 8:00 p.m. The event will be held at South Shore High School, 6565 Flatlands Avenue, in Brooklyn.
