When a relationship ends, does a stepparent’s relationship with the child have to end too? In this 8 At The Table conversation, Amanda, Romeo and Erin The Renegade debate a complicated family situation involving a mother, her young son and the man who helped raise him. The child’s biological father isn’t in the picture. When the boy is only two years old, his mother enters another relationship and eventually marries. For the next four years, her husband helps raise the child and becomes the father figure the little boy knows. Then the marriage ends. The former stepfather still wants to remain involved in the child’s life—but the mother eventually enters a new relationship with another man. Now the table has to answer a difficult question: Should the former stepfather still be allowed to help raise a child who isn’t biologically his? One side questions why a mother would continue co-parenting with a man who isn’t the child’s biological father, especially once she’s building a life with someone new. But the other side raises an even bigger concern: if this man has loved, supported and raised the child for years, should the child lose his father figure simply because the adults’ relationship didn’t work? And if the mother eventually enters other relationships, how many different men should be introduced into a child’s life as father figures? This conversation gets into stepfathers, blended families, co-parenting, single mothers, absent fathers, dating with children, divorce, fatherhood and what truly makes someone a parent. 👇 If a man raised your child from age 2 to 6 and the relationship ended, would you allow him to remain in your child’s life? And for the men: Could you continue loving and raising a child after your relationship with the mother was over?
