When Christopher Wallace, better known as the Notorious B.I.G. or Biggie, rapped these catchy lyrics in his hit, Juicy, no one could have predicted even then that the art form would evolve into what is has in 2026. Legend says that hip-hop was “born” on August 11, 1973 at a no-frills back-to-school bash in The Bronx borough of New York City. Twenty-one years later, Biggie’s smash single dropped in 1994, which for many represents what has affectionately been labeled the golden era of hip-hop. Funny enough, lots of Biggie’s then peers are now 50+ and taking the art form to higher heights, soaring beyond expectations.

There simply are no limits to what hip-hop trailblazers can do, regardless of age or years in the game. In addition to the names that regularly occupy our timelines, there are people like Dupré Kelly—better known as “DoItAll” from the 1990s platinum-selling hip-hop group Lords of the Underground—who is a city councilman in Newark, New Jersey. Kelly made history in 2022 as the first platinum hip-hop artist ever elected to public office.

The women who helped lay hip-hop’s foundation are still out here breaking glass ceilings. Heather B. (Your contribution to Sway in the Morning is necessary. Plus, you are the blueprint for Black women in reality television—period.), Roxanne Shanté (Sis has her own radio show and had her own Netflix bio-flick starring Nia Long; that’s influence.), Queen Latifah is the ultimate multi-hyphenate and has consistently remained relevant for nearly 40 years, and then there’s the musical mastermind known as Missy Elliott who brilliantly shaped our Aaliyah tribute at this year’s ESSENCE Festival of Culture, making it one of the most talked about sets of the weekend. This is what makes hip-hop culture so powerful. It is about breaking rules, giving a voice to the voiceless and testing creative boundaries all while staying unapologetically authentic.

In honor of hip-hop’s 53^rd birthday, we’ve curated a list of 10 veteran hip-hop artists who have uniquely carved out their own lanes to maintain relevancy in creative yet authentic ways.

JAY-Z
He’s not a businessman, he’s a business, man. Beyond strategic plans and revenue predictions, the music still resonates. Shawn Carter aka Jay-Z made his musical debut in 1989 with a feature on Jaz-O’s Hawaiian Sophie. The father and husband just broke the all-time attendance and ticket sales records for a concert at Yankee Stadium on back-to-back nights during his July 2026 residency in the Bronx. #micdrop

NAS
His 1994 debut album Illmatic has been labeled by many music critics are the greatest hip-hop album of all time. A prolific lyrist and iconic storyteller, Nasir “Nas” Jones has nothing left to prove and yet he collaborated with younger producer Hit-Boy to create the album that won him his first Grammy in 2021, showing that he’s not afraid to evolve musically. Mr. Jones has also made smart investments in tech brands like Coinbase, Lyft and Ring. More recently, he partnered with Resorts World New York City on a $5 billion expansion plan for a casino in his hometown of Queens, NY.

LL COOL J
The ladies love Cool J and and LL apparently loves a pivot. After debuting in 1984 at the tender age of 16 with I Need A Beat, the smooth rapper crushed the music scene with countless accolades. He was one of the rappers to transition into acting early and has appeared in a plethora of successful projects on the small and big screen. He’s had a regular role on the NCIS series for an outstanding 14 seasons. These days LL Cool J is also killing it with his genius Rock the Bells franchise which includes a cruise, digital content, a podcast network with both audio and video series, an annual concert and more.

SALT-N-PEPA
The first ladies of hip-hop released their debut album Hot, Cool & Vicious in 1986. Since being trailblazers for women across musical genres, not to mention style inspo for decades, the trio has expanded their reach even further. Salt (Cheryl James), Pepa (Sandra Denton) and Spinderella (Deidra Roper) continue to actively tour with the likes of TLC and En Vogue while Spin is also making her mark in the health, fitness space. The trio was officially inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2025.  

JADAKISS AND FAT JOE
Their super popular podcast, Joe and Jada, is one none of us knew we needed in our lives. They are hilarious, thought-provoking and without question culturally relevant. Jadakiss also has a coffee line, Kiss Cafe, with his father and son. Fat Joe owns sneaker and athletic stores, as well as an equity share in the grooming brand, Rewind it 10. Collectively, Jadakiss and Fat Joe have been in the game for more than 60 years! And to think that in some ways, they’re just getting started.

MC LYTE
Her lyrics and delivery are legendary. Born Lana Moorer, MC Lyte was first solo female rapper to release a full rap album, Lyte as a Rock, in 1988. In 2026, she still gets praised for being one of the nicest MCs to ever do it. (10% Dis is one of the best battle raps of all time.) Lyte has also become a go-to for major award show hosting gigs from the BET Awards to the NAACP Awards to the Grammys in part because of her distinct raspy and confident voice.

METHOD MAN
M-E-T-H-O-D MAN! The rapper who once referred to himself as the panty raider just celebrated 25 years of marriage. Stomping on the scene as an original member of the groundbreaking group, Wu-Tang Clan in 1992, Method Man has enjoyed a successful solo career, has an impressive acting resume and just announced a creative partnership with major retailer Foot Locker, proving that he’s far from done. Not to mention, Method Man and the Wu-Tang Clan performed an energetic halftime show (dripped in NY Knicks gear) during the NBA Finals earlier this summer proving that he is definitely still in the game.
