A lady has sparked conversations online after sharing how an unsolicited ₦10,000 gift from a friend based in the United Kingdom left her feeling conflicted.

The incident, which occurred earlier this week in Lagos, followed a casual conversation about life in Nigeria and the country’s current economic challenges.

According to her account, the discussion touched on rising living costs and governance under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Hours later, she received a bank alert for ₦10,000, which she said she initially ignored before a follow-up message advised her to “manage it.”

She asked how Nigeria was treating me and how I was coping with the economy. I told her I was fine. I didn’t complain or ask for help,” the lady recounted.

Unintended meaning of a kind gesture

The woman explained that while the gesture may have been well-intended, the wording of the message made her uncomfortable. She said the amount and tone made her feel pitied rather than supported.

When I saw the alert, I felt like sending it back and adding ₦90,000,” she added.

    Echoes of a familiar debate

Similar conversations emerged in mid-2024 when Nigerians on social media rejected unsolicited financial gifts from diaspora contacts, arguing that economic hardship is not limited to Nigeria.

The post has since drawn mixed reactions, with some urging gratitude, while others emphasise dignity in financial interactions.
