A man has gone viral after recounting how he jokingly told a new friend he was heterosexual after weeks of receiving unexpected acts of kindness, fearing there could be a hidden motive behind the generosity.

The man explained that he met the individual at a football pitch about a month ago, and the pair quickly discovered they lived in the same neighbourhood.

Since then, the new friend had been picking him up every Wednesday evening and Saturday morning for football, paying for both of their match fees and buying water after each game.

Their friendship grew even stronger after they unexpectedly met at the same church.

The man said the friend also checked on him after seeing a social media post about his flooded home, helped him and his brother clean up, then later returned with a bucket of KFC and drinks so they could watch Club World Cup matches together.

New friend’s explanation ends the misunderstanding

The man said the latest act of kindness came after football when his friend stopped at a boutique to collect an order and insisted he choose a pair of trousers, which he paid for.

The man said, “Bro, I like women o. Just in case all this kindness is because of one thing. Abeg, I’m straight as a ruler, I no dey do man.”

According to him, the comment left both of them laughing before his friend explained that he had only relocated to Lagos in April, had not made many friends yet and that he was the first Igbo man he had become close to in the city.

    Story sparks reactions online

After narrating the incident to his brothers, the man said they laughed at him for making the remark.

However, he maintained that life in Lagos could make people question the intentions behind unexpected generosity from strangers.

His story has since generated conversations on social media, with many Nigerians saying genuine friendships still exist, while others admitted they understood why he felt the need to clarify his position before the friendship became misunderstood.
