Nigeria’s political landscape witnessed fresh turbulence on Tuesday as Senate President Godswill Akpabio declared that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) “appears dead” amid a growing wave of defections by its members.

Akpabio made the remark during plenary while reacting to the continued exit of lawmakers from the party to other platforms, notably the National Democratic Congress and the Labour Party.

    Senate reacts to rising defections

The Senate President spoke after the official announcement of fresh defections, including that of Victor Umeh, who recently aligned with the NDC.

Expressing frustration over the frequency of such movements, Akpabio said: “Resignation from ADC and declaration for Labour Party.

Maybe all those defecting from ADC should just compile everything in one paper and bring, so that we don’t keep announcing, announcing, announcing.

“Because I think ADC is dead.

“How many times can you defect in a month? Once. But some have done three times.”

He further advised that lawmakers intending to switch parties should submit their names collectively rather than through repeated individual announcements, noting that the trend was becoming excessive.

‘Daily ritual’ of party switching criticised

Akpabio warned that the persistent declarations were beginning to resemble a routine exercise rather than a serious political process.

“So that it doesn’t look like a daily ritual.

“If you are defecting from Labour, you write all of you. If you are moving from ADC, you write all of you. If you are entering NDC, you write all of you,” he added.

In a lighter moment, he referenced the multiple party movements of Enyinnaya Abaribe, drawing laughter in the chamber.

Note that Senator Abaribe has moved from APGA to ADC, and now he has moved from ADC to Labour Party,” he joked.

House of Representatives records mass exits

The development comes as the House of Representatives also recorded a significant shift on the same day, with at least 17 lawmakers formally announcing their departure from the ADC during plenary.

The defectors, drawn from states including Kano, Anambra, Lagos, Edo and Rivers, cited internal disputes within the party as the primary reason for their decision.

In separate letters read on the floor, the lawmakers pointed to “unresolved crises from the national to ward levels” within the ADC, which they said made their continued stay untenable.
