    The Hype Magazine Remembers Jim Gilstrap

    The Hype Magazine extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, colleagues and fans of legendary vocalist James “Jim” Gilstrap, who passed away from natural causes on July 18, 2026, at age 79.

    For more than five decades, Gilstrap’s unmistakable voice helped shape the sound of American soul, R&B, pop and television. Millions knew him as a co-lead vocalist on the iconic “Good Times” theme song, while music lovers heard him deliver the memorable opening lines of Stevie Wonder’s GRAMMY Award-winning classic “You Are the Sunshine of My Life.”

    A respected member of Stevie Wonder’s Wonderlove, Gilstrap also contributed his extraordinary vocal gifts to recordings and performances involving Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Anita Baker, Bill Withers, Gladys Knight, Luther Vandross, Patti LaBelle, George Benson, Dolly Parton and many others.

    As a solo artist, Gilstrap earned international recognition with his 1975 hit “Swing Your Daddy and continued showcasing his range and musicality through projects including the 1976 album Love Talk.

    His influence was not measured only by the names attached to the records. It could be heard in the warmth, power and precision he brought to every performance. Though many of his contributions were made behind the scenes, his voice became part of the soundtrack of generations.

    In a statement announcing his passing, Geoffrey “Geoff Gil” Gilstrap, Jim Gilstrap’s nephew and family spokesperson, remembered him for his professionalism, humility, generosity and genuine love for music.

    “His voice may no longer fill the studio, but his music will continue to inspire generations,” the statement read.

    The Hype Magazine joins the global music community in honoring Jim Gilstrap’s extraordinary life, enduring artistry and immeasurable contribution to music history.
