Issey Miyake’s pleats paved a distinct path for the brand. Now, Pleats Please pieces are some of the most coveted archival grails — but the brand’s latest project proves that pleats don’t just have to be limited to clothing. A-POC ABLE Issey Miyake has launched a first-of-its-kind project, a collection of sculptural lighting fixtures in collaboration with Swiss-based design studio Atelier Oï.Atelier Oï has strong roots within interior design and architecture, so those perspectives were carried over into this multidisciplinary project. With the help of Japanese portable lighting manufacturer Ambientec, the brand rolled out the first phase of this collab: the “O Series.” The O Series consists of pieces that meld a single piece of fabric to a single piece of wire — portraying a delicate balance between structure and softness. The series’ detachable lampshades come in three styles, and the light can be dimmed to four different levels to set the mood. Each is crafted out of a steam stretch material — the same used to produce APOC Able Issey Miyake clothing. This material’s innovative qualities shine, as each lamp displays fabric shrinkage due to a unique heat reaction. The result is home decor that stands out from the rest — because who said your lamps can’t be pleated too?The lamp and shades are sold separately, with the lamp going for $898.38 USD and the shade going for $228 USD.
