We blinked and somehow it is the middle of August! Sadly, many of the rooftop brunches, cookouts and picnics we were supposed to enjoy never happened. Back-to-school season is in full swing; Halloween decorations are already on display in stores and pumpkin spice everything will be available any minute now. But, before we bid summer 2026 a farewell, let’s remember that fall does not officially begin until September 22.

So, if you are looking for last-minute summer vacay ideas, consider a road trip. No hassle at airport security, no need to max out your credit card and more freedom to truly enjoy the experience at your leisure which is what travel should prioritize anyway. A refreshing change of scenery does the body, mind and soul, good. Bonus: There are likely to be less crowds since most people tend to complete their summer travel earlier in the season.

Here are 5 destinations that are relatively close (less than a four-hour drive) from major U.S. cities yet will make you feel as though you traveled far away. No passports necessary.

    CHARLOTTE/RALEIGH-DURHAM/GREENSBORO OUTER BANKS, NC

Perhaps you’ve heard about or even watched the hit Netflix show, The Outer Banks, and are curious to see the real deal. Skip the hotels and consider renting a private house (preferably with a pool) for easy access to all the sights. Ocracoke Island is consistently ranked among America’s most pristine beaches, offering an uncrowded and peaceful, remote escape. Nags Head is praised for being family friendly and Corolla is scenic and inhabited by wild horses. Spend time at touristy spots like the Wrights Brothers National Memorial. Don’t leave OBX without soaking in Black history by touring Freedmen’s Colony on nearby Roanoke Island. The Outer Banks is approximately a three-and-a-half-hour drive from Raleigh.

    CHARLESTON/ATLANTA SEA ISLANDS
The Sea Islands are so underrated! You’ve likely heard of Hilton Head, but it is actually only one of about 100 islands in this region. You’ll appreciate the world-class golf, fishing, ultimate relaxation and authentic (and delicious) low-country grub – from shrimp and grits to she-crab soup. You dare not leave without exploring the rich and under-celebrated Gullah Geechee culture that is in abundance here. One of our favorites is the secluded Daufuskie Island, accessible only by water. Try the Sallie Ann Authentic Gullah Tour for a profound look into the culture’s history. Driving distance from Charleston to Daufuskie Island is roughly two hours.

    NEW YORK CITY THE BERKSHIRES
We know and love Martha’s Vineyard, but don’t sleep on this other picturesque New England area. The Berkshires is filled with lush greenery, rolling hills and friendly locals. Outdoor concerts, fishing and hiking are a few of the popular pastimes in this northeast destination. Late summer and the fall (The foliage is stunning!) are popular times for visitors to enjoy the relaxing location. Rumor has it that singer John Legend has been spotted enjoying this lowkey gem which is only two and a half hours from midtown Manhattan.

    LOS ANGELES JOSHUA TREE
Visiting Joshua Tree feels like walking through an idyllic postcard. It is a breathtaking place. Only a two hour and 15 minute drive from Los Angeles, you will fall in love with the area’s magnificent desert sunsets. Awesome hiking trails are also plentiful here, as is stargazing and rock climbing (make sure to take pics at Skull Rock).
