Waters agreed with Roland that Democrats cannot afford to spend this moment consumed by intraparty fights while Republicans hold power. She said Democrats have to stay together, raise money, expand the map, and focus on winning in November. She also said the conversation cannot stop at broad political rhetoric. Voters want to know what Democrats will do, how they will address affordability, and whether the party is serious about putting money where it is needed. Roland pressed Waters on the need for stronger investment in Black communities and Black voter turnout. Waters agreed that organizing in Black communities often costs more because many people cannot afford to volunteer for free. She said, “We have to almost pay everybody we put on the ground to vol so-called volunteer,” underscoring the real cost of door knocking, turnout work, and field operations. She also said Black lawmakers must continue pushing party organizations for resources while building new funding streams of their own. Waters was especially blunt about the kind of empty recognition that does not help win elections. “Don't give me another plaque,” she said, explaining that ceremonial praise means nothing if it is not paired with money, organizing, and support that can help take the country back. She also said wealthy Black donors could be doing more and emphasized the importance of both large and small dollar giving. The interview also included a forceful defense of what Congressional Black Caucus members actually do. Waters explained how committee work affects Black communities every day through financial regulation, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, housing policy, Section 8, CDFIs, Black banks, credit unions, anti-redlining work, and support for Black farmers.
