Morgan State University faculty are gaining national and international recognition for research that is reshaping how entrepreneurship can drive economic mobility in underserved communities.

Two scholars from the University’s Earl G. Graves School of Business and Management (Graves School), Golshan Javadian, Ph.D., associate professor for Business Administration and Angela Dukes, adjunct professor, have received the Best in Track Award for Entrepreneurship at the Society for Advancement of Management’s (SAM) International Business Conference. The honor was received for their collaborative paper entitled “Systematic Review of Entrepreneurship Training for the Underserved and Underrepresented Communities: Design, Delivery, and Impact.”

Their award-winning study, which underscores the growing impact of Morgan’s research on equity-centered business practices, examines how entrepreneurship training programs can be more effectively designed to support underrepresented populations—an area of increasing importance as institutions and policymakers seek solutions to persistent economic disparities.

“Being part of the Morgan State University academic community has shaped how I approach research,” said Dukes. “It has grounded me in the expectation that research should not only advance theory but also create meaningful impact on the human experience.”

Drawing on a systematic review of 32 peer-reviewed studies, the research identifies key elements that contribute to successful outcomes, including culturally responsive program design, mentorship, and hands-on learning experiences.

The pair’s findings point to a clear conclusion: entrepreneurship programs that are intentionally designed with inclusivity at their core can significantly improve business success rates and long-term economic mobility. At the same time, the study highlights critical gaps, particularly around sustained business growth, access to capital, and the need for community-driven approaches, offering a framework for future innovation in the field.

Beyond its academic rigor, their research also stands out for its practical implications. By identifying both best practices and systemic shortcomings, the work provides actionable guidance for educators, nonprofit leaders, and policymakers working to expand economic opportunity through entrepreneurship.

“Angelea Dukes and Golshan Javadian’s work highlights the transformative potential of entrepreneurship when it is designed with intention and inclusivity,” said Shelby Perry, 2026 SAM International Business Conference Chair. “Their research provides a clear roadmap for educators, policymakers, and practitioners seeking to create meaningful and lasting impact in underserved communities.”

Since its establishment in 1912, the Society for Advancement of Management, Inc. has committed to promoting scientific study of the principles governing organized efforts in industrial and economic life. The SAM International Business Conference brings together scholars, practitioners, and students from around the world to share research that advances the field of management.

The recognition from SAM places Morgan among institutions contributing meaningful, real-world solutions to complex economic challenges. It also reinforces the University’s commitment to scholarship that not only advances theory but delivers tangible impact—particularly for communities historically excluded from traditional pathways to wealth creation.

Presented annually, SAM’s Best in Track Awards honor research that demonstrates both scholarly excellence and measurable societal relevance. This year’s recognition affirms Morgan State University’s role as a leader in producing research that bridges academia and community impact on a global stage.
