The opposition Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has selected Aminu Abdulsalam, Kano State’s former deputy governor, as its candidate for governor in 2027.

Mr Abdulsalam’s nomination came after he resigned as deputy in January due to disagreements with Governor Abba Yusuf over the latter’s switch to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Mr. Abdussalam resigned in March, only weeks after the state House of Assembly began impeachment procedures against him.

His nomination came after an NDC stakeholders’ meeting headed by former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso at his Miller Road mansion in Kano.

Mr Kwankwaso revealed the development in a Facebook video broadcast shared by his media adviser, Saifullahi Hassan, on Friday morning.

He also announced Nasiru Gawuna, the APC’s 2023 governorship candidate for Kano State, as the senatorial candidate for Kano Central District.

Mr Gawuna, who defected from the APC in March after months of demonstrations over alleged marginalisation following his aborted governorship attempt, will succeed Rufai Hanga.

The NDC already announced Kassim Batayya as its senatorial candidate for the Kano South District, but the party has yet to name a candidate for the Kano North District.
