Most available seats will run from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., 260 days a year—moving beyond the traditional school calendar. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the change is aimed at making child care more practical and affordable for parents who work full-time. The initiative is part of a larger effort to create universal child care for children from six weeks to five years old. The rollout will begin with around 2,000 seats, with plans to expand further. While full-day, full-year care will become the standard, families will still have flexible options. The city is also investing in more early education seats and tools to help parents find and access care.
