Memphis residents are fighting back against Elon Musk’s data center expansion, and Justin Pearson says the cost is measured in “our lungs, our lives” while billionaires hand communities chump change. Justin Pearson says the fight is far from over. Pearson tells Roland Martin that residents have spent two years fighting Elon Musk’s xAI expansion in Memphis and North Mississippi. He argues that the economic-development pitch does not match the reality on the ground, saying these facilities can consume community resources while producing relatively few permanent jobs. “The truth of the matter is they’re lying about the economic development,” Pearson says. He describes data centers as computers that use drinking water while ultimately threatening jobs, and says communities are receiving “chump change” compared with the scale of billionaire investment and profit. Pearson puts the human cost in even sharper terms: “what do we sacrifice? Our lungs, our lives, emergency room visits, sickness, illness, and premature deaths all for the benefit of these billionaires.” The Memphis proposal still has additional readings before it can become final. Pearson says organizers plan to keep packing City Council meetings until the moratorium crosses the finish line. He also describes a growing coalition of people across race, region, and party lines who are pushing back against data centers over land, water, pollution, jobs, and the lack of transparency surrounding these projects. #RolandMartinUnfiltered #BlackStarNetwork #JustinPearson #ElonMusk #Memphis #DataCenters #xAI #EnvironmentalJustice Black Star Network Partner: Chapter Chapter and its affiliates are not connected with or endorsed by any government entity or the federal Medicare program.
