We need to retire this myth properly. The idea that melanin-rich skin does not need SPF is still circulating, and it is costing us. Dermatologists across the UK are seeing rising cases of late-diagnosed skin conditions in darker skin tones, partly because protection is not being prioritised.

Brands are finally catching up. New launches are focusing on invisible finishes, no white cast, and formulations designed specifically for deeper skin tones. It is progress, but it is also overdue.

The bigger shift is cultural. SPF is no longer being framed as just beachwear. It is daily skincare. It is prevention. And it is non-negotiable.

There is also a deeper layer to this. For years, beauty marketing excluded darker skin from conversations around sun care. So the gap is not just education, it is representation. When you do not see yourself in the messaging, you do not see yourself in the risk.

Now we are rewriting that narrative. Slowly, but clearly.

The rule is simple. If you have skin, you need SPF. No exceptions.
