#TheBlackTable w/ Dr. Greg Carr: The Long Death of Slavery. Why Emancipation Failed What if emancipation did not end slavery's legacy, but reorganized it? Dr. Greg Carr sits down with historian and Northeastern University professor Dr. Kris Manjapra to discuss Black Ghost of Empire: The Long Death of Slavery and the Failure of Emancipation, challenging one of the most enduring assumptions in modern history. Dr. Manjapra argues that emancipation did not simply bring freedom to formerly enslaved people. Instead, across the Atlantic world, many emancipation policies redirected systems of racial domination into new forms of political, economic, and social control. Drawing from histories spanning the Caribbean, the United States, Africa, and Europe, the conversation explores colonialism, racial slavery, reparations, Indigenous dispossession, and the unfinished struggle for liberation. Dr. Manjapra also examines the enduring "ghosts" of empire—historical forces that continue shaping institutions, public memory, and racial inequality long after slavery's formal abolition.
