Manchester United have confirmed that midfielder Manuel Ugarte has undergone successful surgery after sustaining a knee ligament injury during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Uruguay international suffered the injury during his country’s defeat to Spain at the end of June and was stretchered off the pitch before being taken for further assessment.

    Ugarte begins recovery journey

United said the operation was successful, with Ugarte now beginning his rehabilitation programme under the supervision of the club’s medical and performance staff.

The club did not provide a timeline for the midfielder’s return, but the injury is expected to keep him out for an extended period.

The setback means Ugarte will miss the early part of the new season as he continues his recovery.

    United continue midfield rebuild

Ugarte’s injury has added to Manchester United’s midfield concerns following Casemiro’s departure earlier this summer.

The Premier League club have already responded by strengthening the squad with the signings of Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Belgian international Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa.

Despite those arrivals, United are still expected to pursue another midfielder before the summer transfer window closes.

The club hope the additional reinforcements will provide enough depth while Ugarte works towards full fitness.

United are expected to monitor the 24-year-old’s recovery time line before deciding when he can resume full training and competitive action.
