SummaryURWERK debuts the UR-100V “LightSpeed” Ceramic, a limited-edition watch that translates light’s journey across the solar system into a mechanical displayCrafted from proprietary white ceramic with glass and carbon fibres, the case combines durability with cosmic-inspired aestheticsIndependent watchmaker URWERK has unveiled the UR-100V "LightSpeed" Ceramic, a limited-edition timepiece that redefines horological measurement by tracking the propagation of light through space.Conceived by co‑founders Felix Baumgartner and Martin Frei, the watch reimagines horology as a cosmic interface, translating the propagation of light across the solar system into a mechanical display. This model utilizes the brand’s emblematic wandering hour satellite to trace the journey of a photon from the Sun toward eight planets in our solar system. Beyond indicating hours and minutes, the 3D planetary display highlights exact scientific data points, such as the 8.3 minutes required for sunlight to reach Earth and the 4.1 hours it takes to arrive at Neptune. The watch case represents URWERK’s most advanced exploration of composite engineering. Crafted from a proprietary white ceramic reinforced with glass and carbon fibres, the material combines the visual precision of ceramic with enhanced shock resistance. Developed to overcome the brittle nature of traditional sintered ceramics, URWERK's proprietary polymer matrix integrates finely woven ceramic, glass and carbon fibers to enhance shock resistance. This stratified structure, which oscillates between deep matte and soft luminescent variations depending on the light, frames a black dial designed as a "window into the deep blackness of space." A micro-blasted, DLC-treated grade 5 titanium caseback provides a view of the self-winding rotor, an abstract evocation of the Sun that drives the mechanism. At its core beats the UR 12.02 automatic caliber, governed by URWERK’s signature Windfänger air-resistance turbine system to regulate winding efficiency. Beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, the movement offers a 48-hour power reserve and is mounted on triple baseplates made of ARCAP alloy for maximum stability. The UR-100V LS Ceramic is paired with textured rubber straps in black or white and is priced at 67,000 CHF (approx. $86,375 USD).
