The United States has condemned the killing of members of the family of Plateau-based cleric, Reverend Ezekiel Dachomo, describing the attack as horrific and calling on the Nigerian government to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

In a statement released by the US Department of State’s Bureau of African Affairs, the US expressed sympathy to the bereaved family and urged Nigerian authorities to strengthen efforts to protect Christian communities and other vulnerable groups in the country’s Middle Belt.

According to the bureau, the persistent attacks on innocent civilians remain a major concern.

The United States strongly condemns the horrific killing of members of Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo’s family in Plateau State, Nigeria. The continued violence targeting Christian communities and other vulnerable populations in Nigeria’s Middle Belt is deeply alarming.

“The perpetrators must be held accountable, and urgent action is needed to strengthen security and protect Christians and other vulnerable communities,” the statements read.

The statement comes days after gunmen attacked Kum community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State on July 12, killing nine members of Rev. Dachomo’s extended family, including a two-month-old baby.

Reacting to the attack, the cleric disclosed that the assailants allegedly asked for him by name before killing his relatives. He also revealed that his family had been repeatedly targeted because of his outspoken criticism of the violence in Plateau State.

Rev. Dachomo further claimed he recently received a written death threat shortly after burying his slain family members.

The United States reaffirmed its commitment to working with the Nigerian government to combat terrorism and violent extremism, stressing that every Nigerian should be able to practise their faith without fear.
