A woman has shared a heartbreaking account of a colleague who was kidnapped while returning home from work earlier this year and later died by suicide weeks after regaining her freedom.

The account, which has circulated widely on social media in Nigeria, described the emotional and financial toll the incident reportedly had on the victim, her family and those who worked with her.

According to the narrator, the victim’s family spent weeks negotiating with the abductors after an initial ransom demand.

She said relatives, friends and well-wishers contributed funds and secured loans before eventually raising the amount requested for the woman’s release.

    Family’s struggle for freedom

Describing the events, the woman said the victim’s parents faced enormous pressure as they sought to secure her freedom.

The parents ran from place to place to gather the ransom after negotiations reduced the demand. Family members and friends contributed what they could until the money was raised,” she said.

She further that the victim later disclosed experiencing severe abuse while in captivity, leaving her traumatised after her release.

    Trauma after release

The narrator said the woman struggled emotionally in the days that followed her return home.

She told us about the conditions she endured while being held. Two weeks after she came back, we lost her,” the colleague recounted.

The account has reignited discussions about insecurity, trauma support and the welfare of kidnapping survivors.

Similar debates emerged in 2024 following reports of abduction victims requiring long-term psychological care after their release.

While the allegations contained in the social media post remain independently unverified, the story has generated widespread reactions, with many Nigerians calling for stronger security measures and improved mental health support for survivors of violent crimes.
