Chairman of the Rural Electrification Agency, Ayodele Fayose, has linked Nigeria’s rising population to the country’s persistent electricity challenges, arguing that poor power supply is affecting how Nigerians spend their evenings.

Speaking on the need to address the electricity situation, the former governor of Ekiti suggested that the lack of power keeps many Nigerians indoors after nightfall, limiting nightlife and other forms of outdoor recreation.

According to him, people who have few entertainment options at night may resort to spending more time with their spouses, which he linked to the country’s growing population.

Fayose further argued that improving electricity supply would create room for more nightlife, businesses and recreational activities, giving Nigerians more options beyond staying indoors.

“We need to address this issue of electricity in Nigeria. The people at that level have no alternative attraction. Nothing else matters to them after seven o’clock. It gets dark, and everybody is engaging their wives. And the population simply becomes double.”

The simple problem is because there’s lack of electricity. People go to bed early. Their mind is simply prepared that, well, if this is the only available recreation, let me remain here. But when we address this electricity, there will be nightlife. There will be recreation outside your wife,” he said.

The remarks have also renewed conversations about the need for reliable electricity and better recreational opportunities across Nigeria.
