Why would a woman rather encounter a bear in the woods than a strange man—and are men missing what women are actually trying to say? In this throwback clip from 8 At The Table, Rico Hundo, Romeo and the women at the table get into a heated conversation about women’s safety, dating, sexual history, fear, trust and the viral “man or bear” debate. The conversation starts with a discussion about men and women admitting what they’ve done sexually. Rico references a lyric from The Weeknd about openly admitting to being with other women and asks a provocative question: Why can a man openly talk about his sexual experiences while many women feel they can’t do the same? The women argue that it isn’t simply about honesty. Women may fear being judged, shamed or even facing an unpredictable reaction from a man. From their perspective, protecting themselves sometimes influences what they’re willing to reveal. That leads the table into the larger question of women’s safety around men. Romeo argues that men need to listen to what women are actually saying. Some women carry mace on dates, share their locations with friends, tell someone exactly where they’re going and take precautions that many men rarely have to think about when meeting a stranger. Rico pushes back against generalizing men. His argument: if one man behaves terribly while dozens of other men pass through a woman’s life without harming her, is it fair for the actions of dangerous men to shape how women view men generally? And that’s where the man vs. bear debate takes over. Some women argue that the hypothetical isn’t saying every man is dangerous. It’s about uncertainty: a woman doesn’t necessarily know which stranger is safe. Others at the table reject the bear argument entirely and say choosing a wild animal over a human being doesn’t make sense. So who’s missing whose perspective? Are women unfairly generalizing men because of the actions of a minority? Or are good men underestimating the precautions women take because they’ve never personally experienced dating from a woman’s perspective?
