Angel Reese’s latest achievement isn’t just getting her own Barbie doll. It’s further proof of how one of women’s basketball’s top stars is translating her impact on the floor into bigger platforms away from it.

Before Wednesday’s game against the Dallas Wings, Reese opened up about being the latest athlete to receive a Barbie of her own and what the recognition means to kids who can now idolize someone that looks like them.

The growing platform has been built alongside a basketball career that made Reese a household name before she reached the WNBA. At LSU, Reese helped lead the Tigers to the 2023 national championship and was named the Final Four Most Outstanding Player. She earned consensus First Team All-America honors that season before being named SEC Player of the Year in 2024. Reese finished her LSU career as the program’s all-time leader in rebounds per game at 14.4 and was selected No. 7 overall by the Chicago Sky in the 2024 WNBA Draft.

Long before having an actual Barbie made in her likeness, Reese was known as the “Bayou Barbie,” a nickname she embraced during her time at LSU. That makes her latest collaboration a full-circle moment, taking a nickname associated with her rise through college basketball and turning it into an actual Barbie doll modeled after her.

Her impact carried into the WNBA. Reese earned WNBA All-Rookie Team honors and an All-Star selection during her first season while establishing herself as one of the league’s top rebounders. She set WNBA rookie records with 13.1 rebounds per game and 15 consecutive double-doubles. Reese followed that with another All-Star selection in 2025 while leading the league in rebounding and earning the WNBA Peak Performer Award. She also became the only player in league history to average at least 12 rebounds per game in each of her first two seasons.

Mattel released the Barbie Signature Angel Reese Doll on July 24, while Reebok simultaneously revealed a Barbie-inspired Angel Reese 1, her signature basketball shoe. Reese debuted the colorway during WNBA All-Star Weekend in Chicago, her third All-Star selection in as many WNBA seasons, including wearing it on the court in the All-Star Game. Between basketball, sneakers, apparel and representation, the releases mark another step in Reese’s growing influence across sports, fashion and culture.

Mattel said the doll celebrates Reese’s influence across sports, business, fashion and culture, along with her ability to inspire the next generation. The Barbie Signature doll went on sale through Target, Walmart, Amazon and Mattel Shop.

This collaboration means more to Reese than simply a toy to sit on a shelf.

“I mean, I remember when I was young, I didn’t have a Black Barbie doll to play with,” Reese told reporters. “And just being able to do that now and having young girls have the opportunity to have something that looks like them, I think is important because when you see it, you can be and you believe it.”

She went on to hope that the doll can speak to kids from all backgrounds.

“There wasn’t a lot of opportunity, but hopefully young girls know that they can do it,” Reese said. “I mean, I think this is all for all races, obviously, for any little girl that is looking to play with a doll that is a basketball player. And just being able to do that is really important. And hopefully they’re inspired.”

Reese had a hand in designing the doll to mimic her look. From hair to shoes, she watched over the process which took over two years to complete.

“Blush, pink, long hair, edges, nails, my shoes on there,” Reese said of her must-haves for the doll. “They perfected everything. It was a long two-and-a-half years, but I’m really grateful for them.”

Her signature sneaker was one detail Reese specifically wanted included, creating a direct connection between the Barbie and another major step in her career.

Speaking of shoes, they play into this rollout as well.

The Angel Reese 1 “Barbie” packs pink accents into the shoe, along with co-branded logos on the tongue and sockliner. Reese debuted the colorway during All-Star Weekend and wore it in the All-Star Game.

Reebok describes the colorway as a combination of performance innovation and expressive design meant to reflect Reese’s presence both on and off the court.

“We’re proud to see her Barbie doll debut wearing Angel Reese 1 basketball shoes in this vibrant new Barbie colorway and to bring that same style directly to fans,” Reebok CEO Todd Krinsky said in a statement. “This moment celebrates Angel’s impact on sport, style and culture while giving fans the chance to match Angel’s iconic look and be part of the moment.”

Reese signed with Reebok in 2023 and has since been a centerpiece of the company’s return to the basketball court. With the Angel Reese 1, she joins a select group of women’s basketball players to have a signature shoe. Aligning it with Barbie marks two milestones at once, as Reese’s shoe now doubles as part of how her Barbie doll is presented.

Reese also worked closely with Barbie to create a limited-edition apparel collection. It features women’s and kids apparel including a custom jersey, shirts and headwear all inspired by Reese’s doll’s game-day uniform.

It extends beyond basketball, too. Reese founded the Angel C. Reese Foundation which works to help girls and underrepresented groups gain access to sports, education, financial literacy and more.

Mattel pointed to that work along with Reese’s basketball career and entrepreneurial success when explaining the significance of the collaboration.

“Barbie honors role models who inspire girls to imagine what’s possible,” Nathan Baynard, vice president and head of Barbie at Mattel, said in a statement. “From her on-court achievements and entrepreneurial leadership to her tireless advocacy for girls, Angel Reese is helping children see that confidence, ambition, and resilience can open countless doors.”

From there, the honor of becoming a Barbie puts Reese in some notable company. Athletes, musicians, actors and Black historical figures have previously been given the Barbie treatment. Asked about being mentioned in the same sentence as Sue Bird, Naomi Osaka, Serena Williams, Maya Angelou and Rosa Parks, Reese took a second to acknowledge them.

“There’s a lot of amazing women that have come before me to be able to do this,” Reese said.

Reese has also developed relationships with some of the women whose careers helped establish that legacy.

Serena Williams has become a resource for Reese as her profile continues to grow.

“Me and Serena have an amazing relationship,” Reese said. “We’ve talked over the break and how she’s been able to navigate things over her career, from the negativity to the positivity to how she’s excelled on and off the court.”

Reese also pointed to her relationship with Sue Bird through USA Basketball.

“Just being able to have those legends in my corner is always important to me,” Reese said. “It’s been great having a relationship with her as well.”

The moment brings the different sides of Reese’s growing influence together. She now has a Barbie made in her likeness wearing the signature basketball shoe that carries her name.

For someone once known as the “Bayou Barbie,” having a Barbie in her image wearing her own signature shoe makes the moment about as full circle as it gets.

The Barbie celebration continues Aug. 3 when the Dream host the Las Vegas Aces at State Farm Arena for Barbie Game Day. Special ticket packages include co-branded merchandise such as an Angel Reese No. 5 Barbie Game Day x Dream jersey. The Barbie Game Day collection also includes a Dream tie-back headband and clear crossbody bag, extending the collaboration from Reese’s individual products into the Dream’s game-day experience.

The Barbie-inspired Angel Reese 1 will also release to the public Aug. 3 in adult and kids sizes via Reebok, DICK’S Sporting Goods and Foot Locker.
