    The Australian government has provided a detailed summary of the documentation that international students must present when applying for a Student visa (Subclass 500) in 2026.

    The Department of Home Affairs’ guidance applies to all foreign nationals intending to study in Australia and includes anything from identity documentation to financial verification.

    All applicants must submit the following:

    1. A valid passport or other recognized travel document, as well as certified copies of a birth certificate, national identity card, or driver’s licence, if available.

    2. A Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) for all intended courses, unless the applicant qualifies for a particular category, such as being sponsored by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade or the Department of Defense, or being a secondary exchange student.

    3. Evidence of Overseas Student Health Coverage (OSHC), which must be obtained at least one week before the commencement of the course and must cover the entire stay in Australia.

    4. Residents of Norway, Sweden, and Belgium may be exempt from this requirement.

    5. Proof of adequate funds to pay travel costs, a year’s worth of living expenses, tuition fees for the applicant and any accompanying family members, and school costs for school-aged children.

    6. Unless the applicant is eligible for an exemption, evidence of English language proficiency must be provided in the form of an approved test score. Citizens with passports from the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, New Zealand, or the Republic of Ireland are not required to produce information.

    Responses to Genuine Student (GS) prerequisite questions, which apply to all applications submitted on or after March 23, 2024.

    Applicants must respond to questions in English, with a limit of 150 words per question, about their current situation, reasons for selecting their course and institution, and the projected benefits of finishing the study.

    Additional Requirements for specific applicants

    According to the government, students under the age of 18 must present proof of accommodation and welfare arrangements in Australia.

    Form 157N, which nominates a student guardian, a welfare confirmation letter from the education provider, or a Letter of Support from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade or Defense are all acceptable documents.

    Where a kid under the age of 18 is included in the application, and one or both parents are not seeking an Australian visa, both parents must complete and sign Form 1229, which is the consent form for granting an Australian visa to a minor.

    Applicants for sole custody must provide a supporting court order. Applicants who have changed their name must provide certified copies of the applicable documents, such as a marriage or deed poll certificate.

    Those bringing a spouse or de facto partner must provide documented proof of their relationship, such as a marriage certificate or family book.

    In addition to a current curriculum vitae or résumé, research students must submit a copy of their study subject.
