Texas advocacy groups gathered at the historic Texas Theatre on June 11 to discuss the rapid expansion of data centers across Texas and the potential impact on local communities.

The event, hosted by Texas Organizing Project (TOP), Sunrise Movement Dallas, Southern Sector Rising and Downwinders at Risk, featured a film screening followed by a community discussion focused on energy use, water consumption, public infrastructure and environmental concerns associated with the growing data center industry.

Texas has become one of the nation’s fastest-growing markets for data center development, driven in part by increasing demand for cloud computing and artificial intelligence technologies.

“Texas is the fastest-growing data center market in the nation, and with reports of health, infrastructure, and resource concerns stemming from the building of these centers, people are uneasy right now,” said David Villalobos, political director for TOP and the event’s emcee. “Texans want to know what this means for the future of their families.”

Speakers from organizations across the country highlighted concerns about strain on local water supplies, increased energy demands and the potential effects on public health.

KeShaun Pearson, executive director of Memphis Community Against Pollution, warned that communities should closely examine how data center growth affects natural resources and air quality.

Danny Cendejas, a campaign specialist with Media Justice, called for greater community involvement in decisions surrounding future development, while Women’s March Rural Organizer Kendra Seawright emphasized the need for transparency and public accountability before new projects move forward.

Texas Organizing Project is a grassroots organization that works with Black and Latino communities in Dallas, Harris, Bexar and Fort Bend counties on issues related to civic engagement, economic opportunity and public policy.
