DJ Akademiks is known to have a lot of hot hip-hop takes, but folks calling him a hater might be a little too misrepresentative. Via Twitter, he crowned Rod Wave as the Jay-Z of this generation, an artist he’s always respected but never been a super massive fan of.

“Ngl rod wave fs this generation jay z,” Ak wrote on the social media platform. He was quote-tweeting a clip from Rod’s interview with Charlamagne Tha God. In it, Wave talks about his company Mainstay Touring’s success with not just Rod Wave’s own concerts, but also promoting the record-breaking SoFi Stadium shows from Ye earlier this year.

“We had the highest grossing hip-hop concert ever,” he expressed. “I was able to learn that. It was people around me at the time, before I became the person I am today or before I built Mainstay Touring, it was people who should’ve been mentoring me and helping me and growing with me. But they was trying to run the game on me. We could’ve built this and did this together… Where I’m at today with the Kanye concert and everything, imagine what we would’ve been if we would’ve started that process then… That’s what gave me not only the leverage, but the knowledge. ‘Cause I had to tear my touring business down and rebuild it. I learned about touring, in rooms, meeting people, leveraging relationships. I was learning, so now, I got the confidence. And I know I know what I’m doing. We can do this for anybody.”

DJ Akademiks Compares Rod Wave To Jay-Z

Of course, Akademiks’ take elicited some clowning online from naysayers. But he’s not wrong about Wave building his business acumen in similar ways to Hov and moguls of the past. Also, considering DJ Akademiks’ distaste for Jay-Z, this is an ironic comparison.

Rod Wave has faced touring issues before, which makes his Mainstay endeavor all the more impressive and heartening. He has also spoken a lot in the past about getting his businesses in order as he continues to connect with fans. We’ll see what Rod delivers when his new album Don’t Look Down drops on August 28.
