Ghana produced a disciplined defensive performance to hold England to a goalless draw and delay the Three Lions’ qualification for the World Cup knockout stage.

Thomas Tuchel’s side entered the Group L encounter knowing that victory would secure their place in the round of 32, but they were unable to find a breakthrough against a resilient Ghana team at Boston Stadium.

England struggled to replicate the attacking fluency that powered their 4-2 victory over Croatia in their opening match, with clear-cut opportunities proving difficult to create throughout the contest.

Ghana stand firm against England pressure

The Black Stars remained organised at the back and threatened sporadically on the counter-attack, forcing England to stay alert defensively.

Despite dominating possession for long spells, England failed to register a shot on target until the 57th minute as Ghana’s defensive structure frustrated their attacking players.

Manager Thomas Tuchel attempted to inject fresh energy into his side by introducing Bukayo Saka, whose playing time is being carefully managed because of an Achilles issue.

Tuchel also withdrew Jude Bellingham and sent on Morgan Rogers in search of a winning goal.

    Missed chances cost Three Lions

England came closest through Saka, whose effort forced an impressive save from goalkeeper Benjamin Asare.

Substitute Nico O’Reilly also went close when his header struck the crossbar, while defender Marc Guéhi saw a header cleared off the line.

Ghana, meanwhile, remained dangerous on the break and successfully disrupted England’s rhythm in a match that lacked the flow of the Three Lions’ tournament opener.

    Qualification race remains open

The draw leaves England at the top of Group L, but they must now wait until their final group-stage match against Panama to confirm their place in the knockout rounds.

For Ghana, the valuable point keeps their qualification hopes firmly alive and represents another impressive result against one of the tournament favourites.
