HBO has released the official teaser for JAŸ-Z IN 8, an eight-part original documentary series directed by Rick Rubin and debuting this fall on HBO and HBO Max. The series places Rubin in extended conversation with Hov across music, lyrics, life experiences, and creative process, framed as a candid and intimate exchange described as years in the making.Rubin brings a specific directorial precedent to the project. His previous long-form conversation documentary McCartney 3,2,1 placed him opposite Paul McCartney across six episodes for Apple TV+, using a similarly stripped-back format built around direct dialogue rather than archival narration or third-party testimony. JAŸ-Z IN 8 extends that format to eight parts, giving the series more room than McCartney 3,2,1 to move across a subject whose career spans decades of recorded music, cultural influence, and public life.JAY's participation as both subject and executive producer under his given name Shawn Carter signals a level of creative control over the project consistent with how he has historically approached media access. The series carries a quote attributed to JAY-Z in the press materials: "The pain, you don't say it's necessary, you don't say you need it, but if it's there — you use it." The line frames the series' emotional register before a single episode has aired, pointing toward the kind of candour around process and experience that Rubin's format is designed to draw out.Daniel Kaluuya's presence as executive producer adds another creative layer to the project. The actor and filmmaker has moved steadily into production in recent years, and his attachment here alongside Carter and Rubin positions JAŸ-Z IN 8 as a project with significant creative investment behind the camera as well as in front of it. Producers Leila Mattimore and David Rohde complete the production team.Watch the trailer above. JAŸ-Z IN 8 debuts this fall on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max in the US.
