Men say they want women who treat them like kings—but does that kind of treatment have to be earned? In this throwback 8 At The Table conversation, the panel continues a heated discussion about cultural differences in dating, but the debate quickly becomes something bigger: expectations, reciprocity, boundaries and whether men and women actually teach their partners how they want to be loved. The conversation begins with the argument that women from different cultural backgrounds may enter relationships with very different expectations. Caribbean, African, Latina and Black American women may have been raised with different ideas about relationships, gender roles, taking care of a partner and what men and women should provide for one another. But the women at the table challenge an important part of that argument. If a woman wasn’t raised to automatically take out her husband’s plate, cook, clean or perform other traditional relationship roles, does that make her a worse partner? Or does a healthy relationship require two people to communicate what they need instead of expecting their partner to arrive already knowing? That leads to one of the strongest points of the conversation: “Let me teach you how to love me. Let me teach you how to treat me—and teach me how to treat you.” Should men simply look for women who already fit their expectations? Or should couples build their own relationship culture together? And when a man says he wants a traditional woman who treats him like a king, what should that woman receive in return? This conversation gets into traditional relationships, modern dating, Black men and women, cultural differences in dating, masculinity and femininity, reciprocity, relationship expectations, boundaries, gender roles and communication. Do you believe your partner should already know how to treat you—or is it your responsibility to teach each other how you want to be loved? And men: if you want traditional treatment from a woman, does she have the right to expect traditional treatment from you? Join the conversation in the comments.
