Michael, the film starring Jaafar Jackson as his late uncle, has officially become the highest-grossing music biopic ever made. According to Lionsgate, the film has earned $911.9 million worldwide, surpassing the previous benchmark set by 2018’s Bohemian Rhapsody.

The milestone arrives less than two months after the film’s debut in April. Audiences showed up in a major way from the start, helping Michael generate a massive opening weekend and quickly establishing it as one of the year’s biggest theatrical successes. Since then, the film has continued to perform strongly both domestically and overseas, with ticket sales reaching approximately $358 million in North America and more than $553 million internationally.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua from a screenplay by John Logan, Michael follows Jackson’s rise from his early years performing with the Jackson 5 to his emergence as one of the most influential entertainers in music history. The cast also includes Coleman Domingo, Nia Long, Laura Harrier, and Larenz Tate, while Miles Teller portrays longtime advisor John Branca.

Beyond the box office, the film has reignited interest in Jackson’s catalog. In the weeks following the release, listeners flocked back to classics such as Thriller, Off the Wall, and other staples from his discography. Streaming numbers for both his solo recordings and work with the Jackson 5 saw significant increases, introducing his music to a new generation while reminding longtime fans why his catalog remains so enduring.

The film’s theatrical run is expanding, with Japan opening this week. Industry observers believe Michael could become only the second film released in 2026 to cross the $1 billion mark worldwide.

Michael is currently playing in theaters.
