Nepal has clarified its visa requirements for foreign travellers, revealing that citizens of only one country can enter the Himalayan nation without a visa.

According to visa guidance published by the Embassy of Nepal in Bangkok, Indian citizens are the only foreigners exempt from Nepal’s visa requirement, while nationals of other countries must obtain a valid visa before travelling to the country.

The countries whose citizens require a visa to enter Nepal include:

    Nigeria
    United States
    United Kingdom
    Canada
    Australia
    China
    Japan
    France
    Germany
    South Africa

For travellers who require a visa, Nepal’s standard entry option is the Tourist Visa. Applicants are required to complete the process digitally through the country’s official immigration portal before proceeding with their application through a Nepalese diplomatic mission.

The special arrangement for Indian citizens is linked to the longstanding relationship between Nepal and India. The two countries have maintained an open-border arrangement under the 1950 Treaty of Peace and Friendship, allowing their citizens to travel between both countries without passports or visas under the applicable rules.

For Nigerians planning to visit Nepal, the clarification means that a valid visa must be obtained before travelling, unlike Indian nationals who benefit from the special visa-free arrangement.

The Nepalese embassy’s clarification provides travellers with a clearer understanding of the country’s entry requirements and the different rules that apply depending on nationality.
