What does reparations actually mean? And why is it important to talk about right now? In this special live episode of Undistracted, recorded at Vital Voices Global Headquarters in Washington, D.C., Brittany Packnett Cunningham sits down with someone perfectly positioned to answer those questions: Pulitzer Prize-winning 1619 Project creator and New York Times journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones. Together, they get into why the economic practice of slavery requires an economic solution (yes, reparations is broader, but “frankly, I’m most interested in cash,” says Hannah-Jones); how reparations for Black Americans is different (and isn’t) from Germany’s reparations to Holocaust survivors; and why, most of all, our history shows that we have to have hope. Plus, in the group chat, Brittany hears from Liberation Ventures’ co-founder and CEO Aria Florant and author and activist Preston Mitchum, for a conversation about their own personal relationships to reparations, and how imagining a different future is itself an act of resistance. 0:00 Intro: Why Reparations Still Matter 0:29 Live from Washington, D.C. 2:57 Aria Florant on Learning About Reparations 4:08 Preston Mitchum’s First Lessons on Reparations 5:23 Defining Reparations Beyond Cash Payments 8:15 Why Reparations Matter Right Now 10:10 Repair vs. Revenge 11:32 Imagining a World After Reparations 13:58 Welcoming Nikole Hannah-Jones 15:19 Three Words: Tired, Enraged & Determined 16:37 The Cost of Telling the Truth 17:00 The Economic Case for Reparations 20:40 How "What Is Owed" Changed the Conversation 24:09 From the 2020 Reckoning to Today's Backlash 25:00 Truth, Reconciliation & America's History Problem 28:13 Why America Resists Reparations 30:00 Keeping Reparations on the Agenda 31:00 Universal Programs vs. Racial Repair 33:23 Race, Class & Political Power 35:03 Tulsa, Greenwood & Local Reparations Efforts 36:50 Should Private Money Fund Reparations? 40:09 Building Momentum Through Local Victories 41:31 Navigating Backlash & Online Trolls 42:00 Frederick Douglass, Hope & Impossible Dreams 44:32 The Long History of the Reparations Movement 46:05 Closing the Hope Gap 48:29 Honoring Reparations Organizers 49:00 Let's Go Get Free We want to thank Liberation Ventures for their support of this podcast.
