Zinedine Zidane has been appointed as the new head coach of the France national team, succeeding Didier Deschamps following the country’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

The former Real Madrid manager returns to coaching for the first time since leaving the Spanish club in 2021.

    Zidane begins new chapter

The French Football Federation confirmed the appointment after Deschamps ended his 14-year spell in charge following France’s semi-final defeat to Spain at the 2026 World Cup.

Zidane, who captained France to World Cup glory in 1998, has signed a contract that will keep him in charge through the 2030 World Cup qualifying campaign.

Speaking after his appointment, the 54-year-old expressed his pride at taking over the national team.

“I’ve often said it: there’s nothing greater than the French national team. So it’s a joy and obviously a great source of pride to become the manager of this French national team.”

He also thanked French Football Federation president Philippe Diallo and acknowledged the work of his predecessor.

“I want to thank president Philippe Diallo, the executive committee, and the French Football Federation for their confidence and acknowledge the 14 years of service from Didier and his staff.”

    Deschamps leaves lasting legacy

Deschamps departs as France’s longest-serving manager after leading the team to three major tournament finals.

His achievements include guiding Les Bleus to their second FIFA World Cup title in 2018, taking his place as one of the nation’s most successful coaches.

Zidane, who enjoyed two trophy-filled spells as Real Madrid manager, now faces the challenge of restoring France to the top of international football.

His first competitive match in charge will be a UEFA Nations League away fixture against Turkey on September 25, marking the beginning of a new era for the 1998 world champions.
