A once trash-filled parcel of land in Midtown aims to become a community model to drive population growth in Memphis and create a close-knit neighborhood for middle-income residents to call home.

City officials and housing development leaders gathered Wednesday, June 24, for a ribbon cutting to celebrate the completion of the first phase of BelleMont, a new 23-unit cottage court community, situated on 2.5 acres near the Crosstown cultural district, for households earning about $52,000 a year. Instead of big apartment complexes and sprawling suburban-style subdivisions, BelleMont was built one front porch at a time.
