The Queens-based Platinum Kids Mas will be partnering with Kaios Kids Mas band for their Junior Carnival production in this year’s West Indian-American Day Carnival. Leesa Thornhill, the Grenadian-born leader for Platinum Kids Mas, told Caribbean Life over the weekend that she’s looking forward to the annual joint production. “You can expect nonstop fun and vibes with pretty smiles,” she said about the production, “Mele – The Circle of Life”. Thornhill said it’s “a portrayal of the females of Pride Rock inspired by the movie Lion King.” She said Platinum Kids will feature four sections, comprising about 60 masqueraders coming from “all over the Caribbean.” Thornhill, who has been playing mas since 13, said preparation has been “going well” and according to schedule, hoping that the band places in the top three. She said she has fallen in love with the carnival’s “creativity and culture.” “Being a creative has been in my DNA from a child,” Thornhill said. “Carnival brings a sense of liberation and freedom that you can’t find anywhere.” She said Platinum Kids Mas was founded in March 2020 before she “had the pleasure of running the Junior Band of Kaios International.” “I’ve been in the business 12 years strong,” Thornhill said. Trinidadian Tamera George also told Caribbean Life that she and Yankie Baptiste of Venezuelan and Grenadian roots are producing Kaios Kids with two sections: Azari and Kiluma. She said she expects 75-100 masqueraders “of all nationalities across the Caribbean and even the US” in Kaios Kids. “Masqueraders can expect an experience,” George said. “The children get home-cooked food on the road, unlimited beverages, snacks and goodie bags, great music, and a wonderful and safe experience on the road filled with fun.” Thornhill said music for Platinum Kids Mas will be supplied by DJ Jo Monsta and DJ Father Dread.
