The coaching saga at Texas Southern has taken another dramatic turn.

With the university weighing its next move at the men’s basketball program, Tigers players are making it clear where they stand: They want interim head coach Shyrone Chatman to remain in charge.

Players joined students and alumni in a demonstration on the Texas Southern campus Tuesday, according to  video from Defender Network reporter Terrance Harris. The show of support came just one day before the Board of Regents is expected to consider Seton Hall coach Corey Lowery.

Videos posted by Harris showed demonstrators marching across campus, with Texas Southern basketball players among those publicly backing Chatman. Some players and supporters held signs that delivered a direct message to the university: “Keep Coach Chatman He’s Our Coach” and “Student Athletes Matter.”

The signs underscored the frustration and determination behind the demonstration. The players weren’t simply showing support for Chatman—they were making a public statement about their role in the decision and the importance of having their voices heard.

    Players make their voices heard

Chatman has led the Tigers on an interim basis since Johnny Jones departed Texas Southern in April to join LSU’s staff as an assistant coach to Will Wade.

Since then, Chatman has remained at the helm while the university conducted a national search for Jones’ replacement. For a time, that search appeared to be moving toward a conclusion.

Lowery emerged earlier this month as the expected choice. Multiple reports indicated that Texas Southern planned to hire Lowery, with the move still requiring approval from the Board of Regents.

But before that decision could be finalized, the situation became increasingly unsettled.

Now, the players themselves have stepped into the spotlight.

Their public demonstration in support of Chatman adds another layer to a coaching search that has already generated plenty of uncertainty. Rather than quietly waiting for the university’s decision, members of the Tigers are making their preference known in a very public way.

And with signs reading “Keep Coach Chatman He’s our coach” and “Student Athletes matter,” the message from the players was difficult to miss.

For Texas Southern, the coming days could determine more than just who occupies the head coach’s office. They could also determine how the university responds when the people inside the program make their voices impossible to ignore.
