Manchester United have scheduled a medical for Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans as talks over his proposed move to Old Trafford gather pace.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Premier League club have accelerated negotiations following Belgium’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the experienced midfielder now closing in on a switch to United ahead of the new season.

Tielemans has been one of Villa’s key performers since joining the club on a free transfer from Leicester City in 2023, making 134 appearances and scoring 10 goals.

    United focus in improving midfield

United are looking to strengthen their midfield after prioritising the position during the summer transfer window.

The club has already agreed a £50 million deal to sign Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea, while a move for Atalanta’s Ederson has stalled despite an earlier agreement between the clubs.

Tielemans has emerged as United’s latest midfield target following Belgium’s World Cup exit, allowing negotiations to progress more quickly.

The Belgian international played an important role in Aston Villa’s recent success, helping the club qualify for the UEFA Champions League on two occasions and lifting the Europa League last season under manager Unai Emery.

He also scored in Villa’s Europa League final victory over Freiburg.

    Villa career and previous success

Before moving to Villa Park, Tielemans enjoyed a successful spell at Leicester City, where he won the FA Cup and the Community Shield.

His consistent performances in the Premier League have established him as one of Belgium’s most experienced midfielders.

Manchester United are expected to complete the remaining formalities if negotiations with Aston Villa are finalised, with the club hoping to add the 28-year-old to Ruben Amorim’s squad before the start of pre-season.

United’s pursuit of Tielemans comes after their proposed move for Ederson suffered a setback.

The club had previously agreed a £38 million deal for the Brazilian midfielder, who was expected to sign a four-year contract with the option of a further 12 months.

However, the transfer has yet to be completed, prompting United to intensify efforts to sign Tielemans.
