The United Kingdom government has announced the official list of countries that will not be required to prove their knowledge of English when applying for settlement or British citizenship in 2026.

According to updated guidance on the UK government’s official website, applicants who are nationals of any of the 19 listed countries and territories are exempt from submitting an English language qualification as part of their application.

UK lists 19 exempt nationalities

The countries and territories exempt from the English language requirement are:

1. Antigua and Barbuda
2. Australia
3. The Bahamas
4. Barbados
5. Belize
6. The British Overseas Territories
7. Canada
8. Dominica
9. Grenada
10. Guyana
11. Ireland (citizenship applications only)
12. Jamaica
13. Malta
14. New Zealand
15. St Kitts and Nevis
16. St Lucia
17. St Vincent and the Grenadines
18. Trinidad and Tobago
19. United States of America

Applicants from these countries will not need to provide an English language qualification when applying under the relevant immigration routes covered by the guidance.

What the rule means for Nigerians and other applicants

The UK government stressed that applicants whose nationality does not appear on the exemption list must prove their knowledge of English, even if English is an official language in their home country.

This means applicants from countries such as Nigeria, Ghana, India and several other English-speaking nations are still required to meet the English language requirement unless they qualify for another exemption under the immigration rules.

The government noted that English proficiency remains a mandatory requirement for many applicants seeking settlement or British citizenship.

Fresh requirement for citizenship applicants

The guidance also explains that applicants seeking British citizenship must have a valid English language qualification at the time they submit their application.

It added that individuals who were previously exempt from the English language requirement when they obtained settlement are not automatically exempt when applying for citizenship.

Instead, they must submit a new exemption form if they still qualify for one during the citizenship application process.

The guidance further notes that while most exemptions apply to both settlement and citizenship applications, the exemption for Irish nationals applies only to citizenship applications and not to settlement.

The updated guidance is intended to help applicants understand the requirements before submitting their applications and avoid unnecessary delays.

The UK government advised prospective applicants to check the latest immigration guidance to confirm whether they qualify for an exemption or need to provide evidence of English language proficiency as part of their application.
