VERDY and Paulo Calle’s friendship runs deep. After their first link-up in Tokyo in 2015, the creative consiglieres have been moving together, building their labels Girls Don’t Cry and Wasted Youth along the way. So when it came to opening their first group show, it only made sense to head back to where it all began. The Japanese artist and designer has unveiled In Good Company, a new group show at GYRE Gallery in Tokyo, with Calle, the stateside creative director, on as curator. Featuring an international slate of 14 artists the exhibition does away with a single theme, and instead goes all in on VERDY’S influences and the feeling of being amongst those whose work you genuinely connect with. There’s a painting duet by Zoé Blue M., whose playful Little Table Tokyo Tennis x ASICS mascots recently turned heads Paris Fashion Week; cute and mischievous ceramic animal sculptures from Alake Shilling and Diana Yesenia Alvarado; an abstract canvas by Reginald Sylvester II, the artist who first introduced VERDY and Calle; alongside work by VERDY himself. The exhibition “begins with a sense of feeling and resonance,” the gallery wrote, “the comfort, familiarity, emotion, and creative inspiration that these artists and their works have brought into our lives.”In Good Company is now on view at GYRE Gallery in Shibuya through September 27.
