Paramount Pictures has unveiled the first trailer for Children of Blood and Bone, giving audiences their first extended look at Gina Prince-Bythewood’s adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s bestselling fantasy novel.

Set to Beyoncé’s “Energy,” the trailer introduces Thuso Mbedu as Zélie Adebola, a young woman living in the kingdom of Orïsha, where magic once belonged to her people. King Saran, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, has suppressed those powers through a violent campaign against the Maji. Zélie soon discovers an opportunity to restore what was taken, sending her on a dangerous journey with her brother Tzain, portrayed by Tosin Cole.

Her fight also brings her into the lives of Saran’s children. Amandla Stenberg stars as Princess Amari, while Damson Idris plays Prince Inan, who begins questioning the future his father has prepared for him. The trailer offers glimpses of the different Maji clans and the abilities they possess as Zélie begins to understand the extent of her own power.

Prince-Bythewood co-wrote the screenplay with Adeyemi and reunites with several actors from her 2022 film The Woman King. Mbedu returns to work with the filmmaker alongside Viola Davis and Lashana Lynch. The cast also includes Idris Elba, Cynthia Erivo and Regina King.

Adeyemi published Children of Blood and Bone in 2018, launching the Legacy of Orïsha trilogy. The novel debuted at No. 1 on The New York Times bestseller list and was followed by Children of Virtue and Vengeance in 2019. The series concluded with Children of Anguish and Anarchy in 2024.

For the film, production traveled to locations on the African continent to create Orïsha for the screen. The new footage offers the first substantial preview of Prince-Bythewood’s take on Adeyemi’s world ahead of its theatrical release.

Children of Blood and Bone arrives in theaters January 15, 2027.
