The mother of popular Nigerian singer Mayorkun has opened up on how a simple cover video posted online changed her son’s life forever.

Speaking on the Talk with B podcast, she recalled how neither she nor other members of the family expected Mayorkun’s career to take off after he recorded and shared a cover of Davido’s song on social media.

“There is nothing God cannot do. We weren’t expecting it. He just left for his cousin’s place at Lekki, and when he got there, he went to the music room and was playing Davido’s song and posted it on the internet.

Before you know it, it went viral. He did a cover for ‘Money’ and posted it on Instagram, and it got to Davido,” she said.

According to her, the family was initially skeptical when Davido reached out to Mayorkun, believing it could have been a scam.

However, Mayorkun’s brother, Ayobami, insisted that the message was genuine.

“At first, they were like, ‘Is it him or not?’ But the moment they recognised his voice, they jumped in excitement. Davido told him he liked the song and asked for his measurements. Before we knew it, he sent him a whole box of gifts,” she added.

She further revealed that shortly after, Davido invited Mayorkun to record music with him, leading to the creation of the hit song Eleko, which launched the singer into the spotlight.

The proud mother noted that the success of the song transformed Mayorkun’s life almost overnight, with residents of their Ajah neighbourhood even nicknaming them “Oriyami Eleko.”

The story has since stirred reactions online, with many Nigerians praising Davido for supporting young talents and helping launch Mayorkun’s successful music career.
