Why do some men say their dating experiences change when they date outside their culture? Jamal Woodard joins 8 At The Table for a controversial conversation about race, ethnicity, culture and expectations in modern relationships. Jamal explains why some of his relationships with women from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds felt different from his experiences dating Black American women. He discusses dating Puerto Rican, Dominican, African, Caribbean, Colombian and other women and says the biggest difference for him wasn’t simply race—it was the expectations and relationship dynamics he personally encountered. His argument immediately gets challenged at the table. Is it fair to compare women from completely different cultures based on individual dating experiences? Are men actually experiencing different relationship expectations—or are they simply choosing different types of women when they date outside their community? The conversation also gets into money and dating, traditional gender roles, masculinity and femininity, cultural expectations, what men expect from women, what women expect from men, and whether the places and types of people you pursue determine the relationships you experience. One of the biggest questions raised at the table: Is the issue really culture—or are some men repeatedly choosing the same type of woman and then blaming an entire group when those relationships don’t work? This throwback 8 At The Table conversation with Jamal Woodard challenges both sides to examine how much culture, upbringing, ethnicity, financial expectations and personal preference influence who we choose to date. Do you believe dating expectations genuinely change across cultures? And if you’ve dated people from different cultural backgrounds, did you notice a difference in how relationships, money and gender roles were approached? Join the conversation in the comments.
