Chelsea have confirmed the signing of experienced midfielder Jordan Henderson on a free transfer, with the former England captain joining the Blues on a two-year contract.

The 36-year-old arrives at Stamford Bridge after leaving Brentford, becoming one of Chelsea’s most experienced additions as new head coach Xabi Alonso continues to reshape his squad ahead of the new season.

Henderson’s arrival reflects Chelsea’s renewed focus on adding leadership and experience to a squad that has been one of the youngest in the Premier League in recent seasons.

    Henderson explains Chelsea decision

The veteran midfielder said the opportunity to join Chelsea was too good to reject, citing Alonso’s influence and the club’s long-term ambitions as key factors behind his decision.

“Given the size of the club, the manager, who I have great admiration for, and the quality of the players, this was a huge opportunity I couldn’t turn down,” Henderson said.

“I was also so impressed with how much the ownership want Chelsea to be successful and move in the right direction.”

Henderson also pledged to use his experience to help the younger members of the squad as Chelsea prepare for the upcoming campaign.

“For me, it’s about giving everything every single day, both on and off the field, to help the players around me and the team as much as possible. I’m very excited to get going.”

Chelsea add experience to Alonso’s squad

The midfielder joins Chelsea after making 463 Premier League appearances during a distinguished career that has included spells with Sunderland, Liverpool, Al Ettifaq, Ajax and Brentford.

A Premier League and UEFA Champions League winner with Liverpool, Henderson brings significant leadership credentials to Stamford Bridge after captaining both club and country during his career.

His signing continues Chelsea’s shift towards recruiting proven, experienced players under Alonso, following the recent arrivals of Danny Welbeck.

Henderson is expected to join his new teammates immediately as Chelsea step up preparations for the start of the 2026/27 season.
